Agbesi Amenyo is currently a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Twente (The Netherlands), conducting research on laser-assisted manipulation for coupling and assembly of photonic chips under the supervision of Dr. ir. G.R.B.E. Römer & Dr. Matthias Feinaugle.
He holds a double Master’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering from Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble – Phelma (France), specializing in Advanced Materials for Innovation and Sustainability, and Aalto University (Finland), where he specialized in Advanced Materials for Global Challenges. During his Master’s studies, he completed his thesis at IREPA LASER (Strasbourg, France), focusing on the development of a Laser welding process for glass-to-metal materials and the design of a cost-effective microfluidic device using femtosecond laser welding technology.
Agbesi earned his Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Ghana, where he completed his undergraduate thesis entitled Investigating the Corrosion behaviour of Locally Welded Steel Joints in various corrosive media (Acidic, Basic and Neutral). His academic and research journey reflects a strong foundation in materials processing, sustainability, and applied laser technologies.
Agbesi has developed a diverse skill set spanning materials characterization, non-destructive testing, electrochemistry, product design, life cycle assessment and software development. He has also been recognized with scholarships and awards for his academic and professional excellence.
His research interests lie in development of functional materials with a focus on integrating his multidisciplinary background to advance innovative and sustainable engineering solutions, especially in healthcare.

My PhD project, within the NGF NXTGEN HIGHTECH project, will study laser-induced forming of polymer structures for positioning and alignment of optical elements, such as micro mirrors, allowing hybrid integration in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The objective is to apply laser forming to induce controlled modifications in the device structure, thereby altering the direction of a light beam intended for coupling and reflection from a mirror surface. The materials to be investigated include two-photon-polymerized 3D-printed polymers (IP-S) and thermoplastic polymers provided by the project partner, Morphotonics B.V. The laser forming process aims to assist in alignment of the to-be-coupled light beam reflecting from this micro mirror.
