As a health scientist I am interested in clinical decision-making related to quality of life of the patient. Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a growing trend and has several benefits, including better health outcomes, improved patient satisfaction and lower costs. However, SDM has the potential risk to increase health inequalities, since SDM generally requires high levels of health literacy. It is therefore important to develop inclusive decision support tools that enable all patients to share in the decision-making process regarding their health. Even more, since groups with limited health literacy are also at higher risk of health disparities. In my PhD-project, I will (1) look into best ways to inclusively present outcome data of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs); (2) develop prediction models for multiple diseases to predict quality of life for treatment options; and (3) develop an inclusive decision support tool for SDM in clinical practice.
