I am assistant professor Professional Learning & Technology (PLT). My passion is to do research, teach, organise, and design for personal and professional development and societal change.
In my research, I try to integrate insights from diverse backgrounds (education sciences, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, game design, artificial intelligence) into effective solutions for professional/lifelong learners. I do so with a specific interest in 1) applying game and learning experience design and doing design-based research and 2) Vulnerability and psychological safety, as catalyzers for personal, professional, and societal change. Currently, I am involved in, among others, projects about responsible AI development and learning communities in the energy transition. My prior research background includes fundamental cognitive neuroscience and applied cognitive science and artificial intelligence research into learning and education.
In my education, I try to apply the same lessons from design and vulnerability into my teaching practice. I love to design and teach courses and learn with and from students, as well as designing educational material (e.g. card games), curricula and the right contexts for learning. This is for example reflected in my involvement in the Student Well-being Improvement Program (SWIP).
This is associated for my interest in supervising, organizing, and managing. I find it important that the right context is created for personal and professional development and well-being and find contributions to the (academic) collective crucial. I have for example been closely involved with the Recognition and Rewards initiative, including designing the awareness game mmmAcademia.
Lastly, I aim to have impact, with others, on others, as road to positive (societal) change. This can have many shapes and forms, from hopefully impacting students in my courses, through designing and developing games for change, to giving workshops and advice. As for many academics, this is a continuous quest, to balance tasks and find fruitful routes for meaningful impact. In this, and many other things, I am also still learning.
