He obtained his PhD in 1992 at the University of Utrecht and after a post-doc at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, he started his internship in laboratory medicine  at the Medisch Spectrum Twente in Enschede. As a board certified clinical biochemist, he joined the Jeroen Bosch Hospital, one of the larger teaching hospitals in the Netherlands in 1998. In 2000 he was appointed medical manager (head of laboratory). In 2005, he was recognized as supervisor to interns in laboratory medicine and up till 2021, he supervised 11 residents in laboratory medicine.

At the University of Twente he was appointed professor (part time) in 2011. His chair is at the department of health technology and services research, part of the Technical Medical Centre. His inaugural lecture (Dutch) may be found at https://goo.gl/mQLubr

His research (https://goo.gl/BasxuM) focuses on clinical and economical effectiveness of laboratory diagnostics with particular interest in innovative biochemical markers and innovative diagnostic technologies, like point of care testing
