About Me

Hil Meijer is an associate professor (UHD) in the MIA group at the Department of Applied Mathematics. I started at the University of Twente in 2007 after finishing a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Utrecht (2006).

Can we characterise dynamical transitions in models using knowledge from geometry and structure?

My research interests are in applied dynamical systems theory and neuroscience. Model simulations are helpful in understanding a model's behaviour, but we need clever approaches to determine linearised stability. I am a co-developer of MatCont, a leading numerical bifurcation analysis toolbox, for which I contribute new numerical algorithms and give courses and tutorials on its use.

How can we use neuromodulation to improve neuronal function?

Combining mathematical modelling with numerical analysis, I collaborate with several (clinical) groups to analyse clinical data to improve understanding, diagnostics and protocols. Current projects focus on ion dynamics during energy deprivation (ischemia) and neurostimulation for improved stimulation protocols in epilepsy surgery. Other and previous projects considered sensory processes, such as pain-related somatosensation and neuromodulation with deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease, combining models and experiments. I am open to new collaborations.

Teaching includes Mathematical Modelling, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Nonlinear Dynamics, Programming, and Numerical Methods for Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Neuroscience.
