Research

The qualitative PhD case study focusses on the relationships between personal innovation properties, the work contextual factors and innovative work behaviour (IWB) of employees in their work unit. The first case study was at Philips R&D in Eindhoven, the second at the IT company Topicus in Deventer and the third at Saxion University of Applied Science in Enschede. In this study the individual employee is the central theme. The study underscores the significance of organisational attention to individual properties which are creativity, psychological empowerment and optimism, along with four additional working mechanisms which are: autonomy in work design, innovative teamwork, supportive leadership, and external contacts. Insights elucidate that innovation energy operates as a crucial overall role in the overall process around IWB. This energy yields a result-driven power, gives a state of flow, and instils stamina among employees engaged in IWB. These insights can help in the recruitment process to recognize employees with innovative work behaviour and also give the management the possibility to support them in their daily work. The project started in November 2016 and is supervised by promotor prof. dr. Tanya Bondarouk and co promotor dr.ir. Jan de Leede at the University of Twente at the Faculty of Behavioural Management and Social Sciences (BMS); Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS)
