dr. K.G. Sammler (Katherine)

I am Assistant Professor of Environmental Knowledge, Technology, and Sustainability. I am a political and human geographer with a background in physics and atmospheric sciences. My research interests involve knowledge production in physical and biological sciences as well as how scientific categories are employed  in political projects. I have a specific focus on oceanic and coastal spaces and resources. All my work includes environmental justice perspectives -- considering diverse practices, anti-colonial critiques, feminist and queer theory and methods, and critical science and technology studies.

Prior to joining the University of Twente in February 2023, I led the Marine Political Ecology research group at the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity (HIFMB) at the University of Oldenburg in Germany (2020-2023), and was an Assistant Professor in Global Studies and Maritime Affairs at California State Univerisity (2016-2020). I received a BS in Physics from the University of Oregon (2005), a MS in Atmospheric Sciences (2009) and PhD in Geography from the University of Arizona (2016). My work has received funding from the US National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council, and has been published in journals like Environment and Planning D, Territory, Politics, Governance, and Geopolitics as well as popular outlets like Humanities, Arts, and Society Magazine, and Museum of the Moving Image: Sloan Science & Film.
