Nuno Araújo Gomes holds a Bachelor in Biology from the Aveiro University (Portugal) and a Master's Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the same university. He did a 1-year internship and the experimental work of his MSc. on the Microbiology laboratory of the medicine faculty of the University of Oporto (Portugal), on the Molecular Microbiology field.

Nuno got in touch for the first time with Biomaterial Science in 2014 as a PhD student in the University Jaume I of Castellón (Spain), where he studied the lack of correlation between in vivo and in vitro studies on the characterization of dental implant coatings. His PhD thesis focused on the application of proteomics for the study in vitro outcome of these coatings and finding correlations between the protein layer formed onto a biomaterial surface and biological responses, in particular regarding macrophage polarization patterns. Part of this latter experimental work was done in collaboration with the department of Biomaterials of the Radboudumc (Nijmegen, The Netherlands). From September 2019 he started his Post-doc on the Development Bioengineering group of the UT, where he will work on the microencapsulation of β-cells and study the regulation and control of the immune response to these capsules, under the supervision of Dr. Jeroen Leijten and Prof. Dr. Marcel Karperien.
