S. Čigoja PhD (Saša)

About Me

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Neuromechanical Modeling and Engineering Lab, in the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Sports Equipment Technology at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna. Then, I started a Master's degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, where I fast-tracked to the PhD program with a specialisation in Biomechanics. During my doctoral training, I researched how mechanical work is being redistributed at the lower limb joints when running over prolonged distances and in different footwear conditions. Furthermore, I used ultrasound imaging techniques to measure changes in ankle plantarflexor muscle function when running in shoes with embedded carbon fibre plates.    

Research

As part of the INTERACT research team, my work at the University of Twente will consist of modelling and measuring the long-term adaptations of the neuromusculoskeletal system due to electrical and mechanical stimuli. INTERACT is a research project funded by the European Research Council with the goal to improve the understanding of the interactions between patients and neuro-rehabilitation machines by developing multi-scale models of the neuromuscular system. Ultimately, our work should form new paradigms of human-machine interaction, allowing optimal recovery in patients with neurological injuries.
