Dr. ir. Wessel W. Wits is appointed Fellow at University of Twente and Senior Scientist at Royal NLR – Netherlands Aerospace Centre. His primary research focus is on (metal) Additive Manufacturing Technologies. Dr. Wits received his PhD in 2008 on the topic of integrated cooling concepts for electronic systems. Since then, he has developed a profound interest in advanced manufacturing and thermal management systems.
Dr. Wits has contributed markedly to the field of advanced manufacturing and thermal management. Projects include development of metal 3D printing, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes and associated materials, as well as innovative designs of heat pipes, thermosyphons, loop heat pipes, pulsating heat pipes, pumped two-phase loops and many more heat transfer devices. Next to a solid base in manufacturing and material sciences, heat and mass flow knowledge plays a pivotal role in this respect. Recent advances in additive manufacturing have tremendously enlarged the manufacturable design solution space. Dr. Wits is committed to exploiting this technological progress by inventing even better cooling devices, and by disseminating this to academic peers and industry at large.
Dr. Wits is Associate Member of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), Associate Editor of CIRP Journal of Manufacturing Science and Technology, Chair of the Board of the EU Pathfinder ThermoDust project, Steering Committee Member of THERMINIC, the International Workshop on Thermal Investigations of ICs and Systems, and Founder of the Dutch Knowledge Center for Heat Pipe Technology.
