Research

Ion channels are biological machines that, upon activation, temporarily change their conformation to create a passageway for charged molecules to pass through the otherwise impermeable biological membranes. The resulting transient ionic concentration changes across the membrane is the key process in signal generation and homeostatic processes in all cells. Due to the indispensable role that ion channels play in life, defects in their functioning have significant cellular, physiological, and behavioral consequences.

The research conducted by the BioEE department is focused on the mechanistic understanding and controlling of ion channel function in health and disease. An overview of the current and previous projects can be found on this website.
