Antonio is a PhD candidate in the Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS) section at the University of Twente. His research focuses on enhancing network planning strategies with integrated and robust solutions. In partnership with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, as part of the Kickstart AI initiative, he aims to refine data-driven modelling techniques, capturing the intricacies of network dynamics in competitive environments, to improve the airline's network decisions.
His research spans three primary areas: optimizing route interplay for network planning, investigating airline competition through Game Theory and AI and exploring "coopetition" in multi-hub networks, where competition and cooperation intersect to establish a mutually beneficial network offering. His methodological approach integrates classical optimization methods, including Mixed Integer Linear Programming, heuristics, Game Theory and Machine Learning.
Antonio closely collaborates with KLM's Integral Planning and Control Platform, focusing on developing tools that blend operations research and predictive analysis. This collaboration addresses key operational questions such as when and where to fly, with which aircraft type, and how often. In this context, the aim is to develop cutting-edge solutions that optimize airline route portfolios and improve overall network resilience.
Antonio earned his BSc in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bari (2019) and an MSc in Management Engineering, specializing in Business Intelligence and Analytics from Sapienza University of Rome (2022). During his master's program, Antonio had the opportunity to conduct his thesis research with the Air Transport and Operations (ATO) group at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering of TU Delft University. He embarked on his PhD journey at the University of Twente in March 2023, driven by the dual objectives of advancing academic research and addressing the practical challenges faced by the airline industry.
