SMART Organ on Chip Project
Organ-on-Chip devices are microfluidic devices where human cells are cultured in physiologically relevant microenvironments for advanced diagnostics. This research field is envisioned to revolutionize safety and efficacy of testing for several sectors like pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics and environmental substances.
To realise this potential, Organ-on-Chip developers will greatly benefit from an open research community with access to cheap and easy to use modules. A modular technology with standardized hardware will pave the way for Organ-on-Chip devices that are compatible with automated work flows, have cross platform functionality and large scale manufacturability.
This project aims to implement a standardized microfluidic docking plate to enable integration of functional and tissue modules in a ‘plug and play’ system. Fluidic and electrical interfacing between various modules will be incorporated using techniques like microfluidic multiplexing, flexible electronics, microvalve design and sensor integration.
