Erna Fränzel-Luiten was born on January 17th 1974 in Biddinghuizen, The Netherlands. After secondary school in Harderwijk (HAVO – Chr. College Nassau Veluwe), she studied Analytical Chemistry at the Rijkshogeschool IJselland in Deventer and did an internship at the University of Twente. She graduated in 1995 on the research of the thermodynamic, kinetic and conformational properties of calyx[4]arenes and calyx[4]arenes based supramolecules with high resolution NMR techniques.
After graduation, she went to study Medical Biochemistry at Hogeschool Enschede in Enschede. She did an internship at the Academic Hospital St. Radboud in Nijmegen and graduated in 1997 on mutation detection in tyrosin hydroxylase gene in patients with autosomal recessive DOPA-responsive dystonia.
In November 1997 she start working as a technician at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (EUR) at the department of Hematology and LUMC in Leiden and was working on the identification of prognostic factors in inv(16)(p13q22) associated acute myeloid leukemia.
In June 2001 she start working as a technician at EUR Hematology on analysis of the physiological significance of the vault complex using major vault protein (MVP) knock-out mice. In November 2002 she changed to the working group which performed basal and pre-clinical research on gene and stemcell therapy.
In April 2008 she started working as a technician at the University of Twente at the Thermo-Chemical Conversion of Biomass group.
