Annemieke Romein is a historian specializing in political-institutional and digital humanities research. With academic degrees from Rotterdam and Leiden universities, she has built a robust scholarly career focusing on early modern European history.
Her academic journey includes a PhD from Erasmus University, exploring political terminology across different European regions. She has conducted comparative studies in Holland, Guelders, and Bern by examining provincial regulations between 1576 and 1702, supported by prestigious NWO research grants.
Romein is mainly known for her work in digital humanities, especially handwritten text recognition. She has been a researcher at multiple institutions, including UGent, Huygens Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and currently UTwente.
In 2022, she co-founded the Open Access Journal for Digital Legal History and serves on the Board of Directors of READ-COOP. Her research bridges traditional historical analysis with innovative digital methodologies, making significant contributions to understanding early modern Europe's political and institutional landscapes.
In 2024 she graduated cum laude with a diploma as ECHA-specialist in Giftedness (ECHA = European Council for high ability) at the ICBF of the WWU Münster.
