Carolien Rieffe is professor of Social Interaction Technology at the University of Twente and honorary professor at the Institute of Education, UCL (University College London) in London. She leads the international research lab Focus on Emotions, which spans several universities, also including Leiden University (Institute of Psychology). This lab focuses on the fundamental role of design and the built environment (see NWA grant 'Building 4 Belonging' received in 2024) on the development of emotional intelligence, mental health, resilience, and 'social belonging' in youth. Innovative techniques, such as the use of sensor data, have been developed and are being applied for this purpose. Rieffe and the team study youth of all ages, with special attention and respect for individual differences and neurodiversity, such as youth with hearing loss and autistic youth.
