David Charles van der Griend is an external PhD candidate at IEBIS, BMS. His doctoral research focuses on âEffective Negotiation Behaviourâ.Â
- Davidâs background is rooted in psychology and business, being a trained psychotherapist (BA), health psychologist (MSc), and lead (international) negotiator in the private sector. He has been an external doctoral candidate - writing his dissertation on âEffective Negotiations Behaviourâ- at the University of Twente since 2019.
- Previously working in sales, David moved into management consulting in 2017, focusing on negotiations. He has consulted in both the private sector and the public sector. David worked as a âNegotiation Skills Trainerâ and âAssistant Negotiatorâ for start-ups, SMEs, and MNEs (sectors: Financials Service, Higher Education, High Tech Industrial and Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Aerospace & Defence) and advised NGOs and Political Institutions. During his tenure at the firm, he combined practical skills and insights with his academic findings.
- In 2020 David worked at the University of Twente, in the Entrepreneurship & Technology Management department (ETM). He was responsible as co-founder, programme coordinator, and teacher for the MSc honours programme Great Negotiators. From 2020 on, David co-founded and chaired the board of a researchers-led negotiation think tank called the Negotiation Academic Society. In 2021 David initiated and now leads the âSalary Negotiation Consulting Initiative at Career Servicesâ. Here students and employees of the University of Twente can get additional courses and visit a personal negotiation consultation hour to seek advice and guidance on personal difficulties regarding upcoming salary negotiations.
- Outside the University, David is affiliated with several student-driven non-profit organisations that promote negotiation education in society at large. He co-founded the âNegotiation Project Twenteâ and currently chairs its supervisory board. On a national level, David is part of the âDutch Negotiation Networkâ supervisory board, an umbrella organisation that supports negotiation initiatives in universities across the Netherlands.
- Currently, David is employed at The Gap Partnership, the worlds leading management consultancy in negotiation. Here he supports complex commercial negotiations in various sectors (e.g. FMCG and pharmaceuticals).
