TNW-POF-dept-POF

I am a full professor in the Physics of Fluids Department (PoF). I teach the subjects Fluid Physics (bachelor Applied Physics) and Granular Matter and Particle Technology (master Applied Physics). I am a member of the Department Board of PoF, Discipline Chair of Applied Physics and Member of the Dutch Physics Council (DPC).

My research interests are the physics of fluids in a broad sense: Ranging from the highly dissipative and surprising granular flows, via the fascinating singular behavior of free surface flows during impact of objects on a liquid, to multiphase flows, whether they consist of particles in air or of bubbles in a liquid. In my work I strive for a combination of experiment, numerics, and theory, a strategy that leads to a thorough understanding of the physics of the mesmerizing world of fluids.

Examples of my work include the impact of an object on a granular bed, dynamics of dense suspensions, impact of raindrops on sand, bubble growth in supersaturated liquids, electrolysis, liquid-solid impact, and bubble dynamics. Recently I started working on boiling liquids, liquids in thermodynamical equilibrium with their own vapor phase, studying the crucial influence of phase change on impact dynamics. My work is relevant to a range of industrial and societal challenges connected to climate change and the energy transition.
