After completing the Atheneum I went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich, where I obtained a BSc-degree in Liberal Arts and Engineering. From there I went to the Delft University of Technology where I obtained the degree of “Ingenieur” (Master of Science) in 1986. After some years of developing instrumentation for research at the Radboud University of Nijmegen I accepted a position as Assistant Professor in the department of Biomechanical Engineering of the University of Twente.
