I am trained as a mathematician and received Ph.D. in mathematical optimization from the University of Twente. I have also obtained PDEng (now EngD)-Mathematics for Industry from the Eindhoven University of Technology; during this time, I was introduced to the world of data science. The current focus my research is applied machine learning and Exaplainable AI.

My primary research interest is applied machine learning for industry and healthcare, especially explainable AI. I am currently engaged in projects related to the application of machine learning for point cloud data, and disease prediction/ progression.

I am currently supervising three PhD students working on topics related to explainable AI:

  1. Faryal Siddiqui [together with Maurice van Keulen]
  2. Annemarie Jutte [together with Maurice van Keulen and Jeroen Linssen]
  3. Shoaib Sarwar [together with Maurice van Keulen]

I regularly supervise Master’s students on topics related to machine learning, explainable AI, and learning analytics. At the Bachelor’s level, I supervise a broader range of topics, including databases, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and educational data science.
