- Before coming to Twente, I was a Full Professor at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, in the Italian Alps, where I lead the Conceptual and Cognitive Modelling Research Group (CORE). Before that, I have co-founded and co-directed the Ontology and Conceptual Modelling Research Group (NEMO) in Brazil for 10 years.
- I am very active in the communities of Formal and Applied Ontology, Conceptual Modelling, Information Systems Engineering, and Enterprise Computing/Business Informatics. My research follows a multidisciplinary program that combines results from Philosophy, Logics, Linguistics and Cognitive Science to address a number of problems in the aforementioned areas.
- I have published circa 400 papers in these areas, and have played many key roles in the main conferences in these fields (e.g. ER, FOIS, IEEE CBI and EDOC) including Program Committee Chair, General Chair, Steering Committee Member, and Keynote Speaker (e.g., ER, BPM, CAiSE, IEEE ICSC). I am currently an Associate Editor for the journals Applied Ontology, Data & Knowledge Engineering, and Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems Architectures. I am also a member of the Advisory Board of the International Association for Ontologies and its Applications (IAOA).
- I have conducted many technology transfer projects in areas such as Telecommunications, Risk Management, Tourist, e-Government, Digital Journalism, Complex Media Management, Distributed Software Development, Energy, among others.
- I am currently also a Guest Professor at Stockholm University, Sweden. There I collaborate on scientific research in the areas of Value-Based Modelling, Formal and Applied Ontology in CyberSocial Systems, and Ethical Requirements for Information Systems.
