Henk-Jan is a PhD Candidate in the philosophy department. His research is aimed at scientific disciplines. Scientists are highly specialised and as a result, it is hard to understand the work of other scientists, let alone to collaborate. Through his background in both biotechnology and philosophy, he investigates what sets scientific disciplines apart, and how these differences lead to difficulties with interdisciplinary collaboration. He is focused on experimentation, mathematical modelling, simulation, realism and anti-realism, disciplinary perspectives, disciplinary matrices and knowledge graphs.

His PhD is part of the EU DREAM project in which chemists and chemical engineers work to develop biorefineries: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101130523.
