I am full professor of Inorganic & Hybrid Nanomaterials Chemistry. My research interests are nanoscale and low–dimensional metal oxide and hybrid nanomaterials, and their application in energy harvesting and storage. My research focuses on the development of new functional materials for electrochemical energy generation and storage devices, in particular Li batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, and thermal heat storage media.

Following my PhD thesis work I was research chemist and research group leader at Akzo Nobel Coatings. I became assistant/associate professor at the UT in 2000. Initially I worked mainly on solution-processed thin films for nanoelectronics and molecular separation membranes. A major breakthrough in 2007 were the invention of the hybrid organosilica molecular separation membranes that have been commercialized under the trade name HybSi® (www.hybsi.com). I am also one of the founders of Flexiramics (est. 2015), a company that is commercialzing flexible ceramic nanofiber technology.

I teach materials science in the bachelor and master programmes CSE, and in the bachelor programme Advanced Technology. I was programme director of the bachelor and master programmes Chemical Science and Engineering (CSE) between 2018 and 2023.
