I am full professor of Inorganic & Hybrid Nanomaterials Chemistry. My research interests are nanoscale and low–dimensional metal oxide and hybrid nanomaterials, and their application in energy harvesting and storage, sensing and electronics.

Following my PhD work I was research chemist and research group leader at Akzo Nobel Coatings. Then, as assistant/associate professor at the UT my research focused on the solution-processed functional oxide thin films for nanoelectronics and molecular separation membranes. I received a VIDI grant from the Dutch Science Foundation NWO in 2005. A major breakthrough in that period are the microporous hybrid organosilica membranes that are now patented and on the market under the name HybSi® (www.hybsi.com). Current research projects are focused on the development of new functional materials for electrochemical energy generation and storage devices (e.g. Li batteries, supercapacitors, solar cells, and thermal heat storage media).

Since 2018, I am also the programme director of the bachelor and master programmesChemical Science and Engineering.
