About Me
Hi!
My name is Karel Kroeze, and I'm a computational statistician with a broad range of interests.
I'm currently working on creating 'smart' learning environments. These environments can provide contextualized and personalized feedback to students, and adapt themselves to the student's level.
In the past, I've worked on multidimensional computerized adaptive tests - and created an R package to simulate and administer such tests. My work will soon be used as the computational back-end for a large number of computerized tests in the Dutch mental health sector.
In my spare time, I enjoy tinkering with technology. That includes my personal website, creating award-winning mods for games, and creating a smart home with my Raspberry Pi(s).

Research
I'm currently working on creating 'smart' learning environments. These environments can provide contextualized and personalized feedback to students, and adapt themselves to the student's level.
This work involves a number of challenges;
- reliably recognizing and classifying mistakes in students' learning artifacts (e.g. hypotheses, concept maps)
- providing automated feedback that is specific and encourages students to reflect on their mistakes
- extracting useful information (indicators) from a semi-structured event stream (logbook), and building a student model that accurately reflects the students' development
- matching learning content that is likely to have the highest impact learning gains to individual students
