I write about research at the University of Twente and try to make it worth reading. My background is biology and science education. I'm naturally very curious, which mostly means I am comfortable being the least expert person in the room and asking the question everyone else is too polite to ask.
I started making Kees Study because reading about research was not teaching me much. So I now get into the wind tunnel, drive the asphalt roller and let the robot take the biopsy. It works better, and it makes the parts I do not understand visible, which is the point.
Who I have in mind when I communicate: the person in the top-floor flat during a heatwave who never heard the city had a plan, and the person about to buy a water filter because a TikTok video was more persuasive than a professor. If a story does not reach someone like that, it has not worked, whatever the metrics say.
Often I get things wrong by pushing a story further than the evidence goes. Researchers who pull me back on that are doing me a favour, and I would rather be corrected before publication than after.
Besides my work for Marketing Communication, I am also a local representative for the Labour Union FNV in the 'Local Consultation'. Also called OPUT. It means I sometimes hold interests that are not identical to the university's. I need your help to make UT an even better employer, so please contact me if you have any labour-related issues!
