Dr. Klaas Stek is an assistant professor of purchasing and supply management in the section Entrepreneurship and Technology Management of the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences of the University of Twente (UT).

Dr. Stek holds a PhD in Purchasing Supply Management from UT. His thesis, Purchasing Skills Leading to Success - How to Succeed in Innovation Sourcing, dived into those competencies that lead to higher effectiveness (or "success") in industrial purchasing and public procurement. His expertise includes competencies and capacity building in public, healthcare and industrial procurement. He obtained his Senior University Teaching Qualification on  A challenge-based experiment aiming to develop strategic thinking - An inquiry into the role of stimulating creativity for out-of-the-box thinking.

Next to his main work at UT, he is part of the Dutch Association for Purchasing Management, NEVI's supervisory board and an Editorial Advisory Board member of the Journal of Public Procurement and the Journal of Responsible Production and Consumption. He has organised Educator Workshops at the conferences of the International Purchasing and Supply Education and Research Association (IPSERA) in Dortmund, Germany (2016); Budapest, Hungary (2017); Athens, Greece (2018); Milan, Italy (2019); Knoxville, TN USA (online 2021); Jönköping, Sweden (2022); Barcelona, Spain (2023) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2024). Dr. Stek is the author of the IPSERA Best Paper Award 2021. His work has been published in the Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management and Logistics, amongst others.

Dr. Stek co-founded the European Lab of Innovative Purchasing and Supply (EL-IPS) at UT. With Esmee Peters, he is responsible for daily management, supervising projects, supporting project applications and organising several meetings and events. By building bridges and fostering synergies, EL-IPS aims to further develop PSM in research and practice. EL-IPS is a unique multi-faculty initiative that unites over thirty Purchasing and Supply Management (PSM) researchers in (1) manufacturing purchasing, (2) public health and (3) public procurement, and (4) public works project procurement of the University of Twente. EL-IPS is involved in multiple European projects and project applications.

As the world’s largest academic procurement research centre, EL-IPS engages in many professional, research and education activities in different domains, such as manufacturing, infrastructure, and public and health sectors – with integration and synergies across sector boundaries. Centred on a shared procurement development agenda, EL-IPS aims to establish regional networks and connect multinational companies (MNCs), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public entities in the Twente region and other regions, nationally and internationally.

Dr Stek coordinates the MSc course Purchasing Management in the Industrial Engineering and Management track. This course provides the students with a balanced mix of knowledge and theory, professional and interpersonal skills and intrapersonal attitudes. The course is yearly evaluated by the students with a grade of 8 or higher (from 1 to 10).
