Dr. Liliana Moreira Teixeira is Associate Professor at the Department of Bioengineering Technologies (Advanced Organ bioengineering and Therapeutics division, Faculty of Science and Technology, TechMed Center), at the University of Twente. Her group on Targeted Microphysiological Systems focuses on the development of human multi-organ microphysiological systems (organ-on-a-chip technology) to investigate the role of organ communication, mechanobiology and inflammation in disease processes. Dr. Liliana Moreira Teixeira is co-founder and co-scientific lead of the Organ-on-Chip center Twente (OoCCT), and she is elected board member of the European Organ-on-Chip Society (EUROoCS). She is co-coordinator of the bone-on-chip group of human Organ and Disease Model Technologies (hDMT).
Prior to joining the University of Twente, she worked as post-doctoral researcher in several groups in the field of Biomaterials, Regenerative Medicine and Engineered MicroSystems, namely KU Leuven (Prometheus, Belgium), Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering (Harvard Medical School, USA), MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine (Maastricht University, The Netherlands), and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Department of Clinical Sciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands), where she was also appointed Assistant Professor. For her work on biomimetic biomaterials and technologies for the assembly of organs-on-chips, she was conferred several awards including the Young Investigator Award by Cells Tissues Organs, NWO-Women in Stem and NWO-Aspasia. Liliana is an active member of the ESB and TERMIS, where she was elected Board Member of the ESB Young Scientist Forum (2018-2022). Moreover, she serves as vice-chair of the Ethics Committee and Biomedical Engineering Education Program Committee of the University of Twente. Additionally, she is editorial board member of the journals Frontiers in Lab on a Chip Technologies, In Vitro Models and Micromachines, and advisory board member of the journal Biofunctional Materials.
She holds a BSc degree in Applied Biology (University of Minho, Portugal), specializing in immunology, a MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering (Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal), and she earned her PhD in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Twente (The Netherlands), in 2011.
