Responsible scaling of data-driven approaches for enhancing mental healthcare

This NWO funded project aims to increase accessibility of mental healthcare by better capacity management, and for more personalized diagnosis and treatment. Much is expected from digital innovation to advance these missions. However, scaling of digital technology is problematic: innovations need to align to organization-specific contexts, making one-size-fits-all diffusion impossible; potential ethical, legal and social issues should be considered; institutionalized pathways for scaling are often missing.

An approach that enables timely access to treatment by aligning treatment needs and capacity is needed. Integral Capacity Management (ICM) has proven effective in improving treatment accessibility as well as reducing work pressure in hospital care. The project will develop algorithms, a decision support system (DSS), and support for adaptation of such ICM solutions in mental healthcare that allow for planning of both standardized as well as personalized treatment pathways, making optimal use of available resources. The project will further study mental healthcare managers’ and employees’ sensemaking and meaning making strategies, and how those strategies are used to implement and deal with change. Interventions will be used to create awareness of these mechanisms and help the involved parties to create new and redesign existing organizational routines that include the ICM solution.

The project is carried out by the departments Mathematics of Operations Research (Applied Mathematics), Industrial Engineering and Management Science, Professional Learning and Technology, Public Administration, and embedded in the Center for Healthcare Operations Improvement and Research (CHOIR).
