I obtained my Bachelor in Health Science and Technology as well as my Master in Biomedical Engineering from the ETH Zurich in Switzerland. During my Master, I did a five months research internship in at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden working on a 3D-printed platform for studying networks of neurons in co-culture with astrocytes.  I then proceeded to conduct my Master thesis on a blood-brain barrier on chip with integrated electrodes in the BIOS group at the University of Twente. In this thesis, I found my passion, and I was very excited to be offered the opportunity to continue in this line of research during a PhD in the BIOS Lab on Chip group.

During my PhD I will be working on improving the design of integrated electrodes in organs-on-chip for the assessment of the transendothelial electrical resistance, a measure for the tightness of biological barriers. More specifically, I will be investigating how these organs-on-chip can be designed in a way that allows for the determination of TEER while replicating the physiological environment more closely than the current standard sandwich chip design.
