Maximilian Goethner is an Assistant Professor in the Entrepreneurship & Technology Management (ETM) section at the University of Twente. He is also a Research Fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics in Bonn, Germany, and serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM).

Maximilian holds a PhD (cum laude) in Technology Entrepreneurship from the University of Jena, Germany. His dissertation, From Lab to Marketplace: An Empirical Investigation of the Emergence and Early Performance of Academic Spin-off Companies, examines the pathways and outcomes of academic entrepreneurship.

His research interests include regional income and labor market dynamics, digital innovation, technology commercialization, and university–industry technology transfer. His work has been published in leading journals such as Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Journal of Small Business Management, Small Business Economics, Journal of Technology Transfer, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Frontiers in Psychology, Journal of Economic Psychology, and Journal of Vocational Behavior.
