Marleen conducts research at the intersection of athlete resilience, power dynamics and systemic change within sports environments. Her work focuses on preventing transgressive behaviours by identifying the underlying social, psychological and structural dynamics that increase athletes’ vulnerability to such experiences. Using a power-sensitive lens, she explores the often invisible power relations that shape athletes’ lived experiences and contribute to the normalisation of harmful behaviours in sport.

Through innovative research approaches, Marleen integrates technology to strengthen psychological resilience among individuals potentially involved in transgressive dynamics in sports. By applying virtual reality, she investigates how specific psychological mechanisms can be trained to enhance resilience and reduce the likelihood of transgressive behaviour occurring.

In addition to prevention, her research also addresses responses to transgressive incidents. Particularly, the restoration of safety in environments where such behaviours have taken place by exploring the role of victim-offender mediation in sports settings.

Altogether, her work aims to embed safety into the DNA of sport culture by fostering psychological resilience, shared responsibility, and sustainable cultural change across the sports community.

Minor: Well-being for all students of the UT

Well-being and personal growth are subjects that currently many students are interested in for both personal and professional reasons. Recently, more attention and effort to improve student’s well-being have emerged in the academic world in general, and at the UT specifically. These efforts in general aim to increase well-being and reduce (the effects of) stress related to studies or related to personal life-event. We feel that now is the time to integrate this subject in the curriculum for a wider target group of students at the UT. The minor can positively influence the well-being of students, thus educating resilient and wellrounded professionals. It can simultaneously instil awareness of the importance of well-being when designing the future and implementing solutions in their respective areas of study.

Strengthening the technology profile in the Psychology Bachelor's degree programme

The University of Twente’s vision is to combine "high tech and human touch", as put forward in the university’s slogan. As society is transforming to using more technology, a great opportunity lies ahead for our programmes of PSY, IBA, PSTS and EST which incorporates technology. The current project proposes to expand the technology to strengthen our technology profile within the Psychology Bachelor's degree programme even more.

Innovation project

Exchange and Double Degree Programmes

The BMS faculty wants to prepare students for living and working in an international environment. This aim is in line with the internationalization vision of the UT, as well as with the mentioned "Shaping 2030" ambitions. To become global citizens, BMS educates students during their study on how to communicate in an international context and how to cope with intercultural differences. The BMS faculty wants to equip students with sufficient capacities and skills in order to cope with and function in international situations. The BMS faculty offers students a number of possibilities to achieve international experience, such as studying in degree programmes in international classrooms with students from various countries, double degree programmes in cooperation with renowned international partner universities, and student exchange programmes that enable students to study at an international university as part of their study (usually half a year). In addition, the BMS faculty aims to offer international students optimal support and guidance. Therefore, this project has the goal to create possibilities within the curricula that enable students to function well in an international context with regard to communication and coping with intercultural differences.
