Maartje Leemans is an assistant professor in the Biomedical Device Design and Production (BDDP) group at the University of Twente.

I studied Biomedical Engineering here at the University of Twente from 2010 to 2018. During my studies, I focused on medical device design and creativity. After obtaining my engineering degree, I did my Ph.D. at the Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in Amsterdam from 2018 to 2023. At the Department of Head and Neck Oncology and Surgery, I worked on various projects focusing on the design and development, and clinical evaluation of rehabilitation devices for patients after laryngeal cancer treatment. During my PhD, I experienced how 'simple' (modifications of) medical devices can already have a significant positive impact on the quality of life of patients, but also that the use of medical devices can generate a lot of waste.
At the BDDP group, I aim to further develop my research towards user-centric & circular medical device design.
