I work at ELAN, the department of teacher development. My research is focused on instructional decision making, differentiated instruction, and teacher professional development.

The MATCH-project was aimed at understanding and improving differentiation in primary school mathematics. Based on the 4CID-model, we designed an intervention to improve primary school teachers' differentiation skills. Also, we developed and studied an instrument to Assess Differentiation in All Phases of Teaching: ADAPT. Next to an extensive manual, we developed an online learning environment where teachers, students and others can learn how to use this instrument. Based on all this, we developed the ADAPT-intervention: a combination of the MATCH-training and using ADAPT by qualified observers in the school. In 2025/2026 and 2026/2027, independent research team from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Hogeschool IPABO will conduct an RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of the ADAPT-intervention.

In the MonitorStartendeLeraren we conduct a longitudinal study into the development of beginning teachers in Dutch primary education. By combining classroom observations with questionnaires, we get a rich insight in development of teaching quality, teacher well-being, induction and teacher retention. 

In close collaboration with Hogeschool KPZ and Kentalis, we are setting up the second phase of a project about differentiated instruction in special education, where interprofessional design teams develop support and professional development activities to improve differentiation and interprofessional collaboration. 

After winning the 'AI in Education Hackathon' our team, with colleagues from Universitat Bremen and University of Twente continued working on the H-AI FIVE project. We have developed a prototype of an AI tool that provides feedback and reflection prompts on instructional videos for education. In the upcoming years, we will refine this tool and pilot it in several teacher training programs.

Furthermore, I am involved in two master programs. For EST, I am one of the graduation coordinators, I supervise students in their final projects, and I coordinate and provide the master courses '4CID for complex learning' and 'Teacher learning and development'. In our Teacher Training program, I am involved in General Didactics and am a member of the program committee.
