N. Basson MSc (Nikki)

Lecturer

About Me

I completed my BSc in Mechanical Engineering at North-West University in 2014. I worked at Eskom's Lethabo Power Station from 2015 to 2019 as a Plant Engineer. During my time in the industry, I also studied for an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, which I obtained from the University of Cape Town. In 2019, I joined the University of the Witwatersrand as a lecturer. Currently, I am also a lecturer at the University of Twente in the Thermal & Fluids Engineering Department. Additionally, I am a freelance scientific language editor. My research interests include the computational modelling of thermo-fluid systems for both biomedical and industrial applications, as well as machine-learning in healthcare. I am currently pursuing a PhD, which aims to study the fluid dynamics of aqueous humour in the human eye and how it could quantitatively affect the patient-specific surgical considerations made by ophthalmologists.

Research

PhD topic: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study on the Reduction of Intraocular Pressure in the Human Eye with Glaucoma Surgery.

MSc topic: Studying Water-Wedging as a Cause for Short Term Overheating in the Boiler of a Coal-Fired Power Plant.

Projects I have supervised:

  • Flow visualisation in an in-vitro setup of the human eye.
  • Glaucoma Drainage Device and Endothelial Cell Damage.
  • Validity of Imbert-Fick Law in the Measurement of Intraocular Pressure.
  • The Effect of Scleral Flap Size and Shape on the Efficacy of Trabeculectomy.
  • Brain-Computer Interface Ability to Learn.
  • Bioheat Transfer Analysis of Modern Cetacean Brain.
  • Strength Analysis of 3D-printed vs Commercial Shin Guards.
