Nienke Bosschaart is an adjunct professor in Biomedical Photonic Imaging with a focus on innovative diagnostic techniques for mother and child care. Her research aims to develop novel methods for i) noninvasive blood analysis in newborns and ii) human lactation research. Nienke Bosschaart has been awarded with an ERC Starting grant from the European Research Council (2022), as well as a Vidi (2021) and Veni (2014) grant from the Dutch Research Council. She graduated in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente (2007) and received her PhD at the department of Biomedical Engineering and Physics of the Amsterdam UMC (2012) under the supervision of Prof.dr. Ton van Leeuwen and Prof.dr. Maurice Aalders. Since 2015, she works at the Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente.

Current projects
Noninvasive blood analysis
In this project, we use optical spectroscopy and visible light sOCT (spectroscopic optical coherence tomography) to noninvasively quantify the concentrations of bilirubin and hemoglobin in the blood of newborns.
Human milk and lactation
In this project, we use our optical technologies to learn more about the composition of breast milk and the physiology of lactation.
