Dr Papadopoulos holds a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies in Education from the School of Informatics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Before joining UT, he held positions at Aarhus University (Denmark), the International Institute for Software Technology at United Nations University (Macau SAR, China), and at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (Qatar).
He has worked in several funded research projects in Europe, Qatar, and Macau SAR, including openSE, Kaleidoscope NoE, and Arabiyyatti, for which he developed educational applications on multitouch surface computers for kids. Dr Papadopoulos was also the project coordinator of the Erasmus+ project InnoEntre and a team coordinator of the Erasmus+ project colMOOC project: Integrating Conversational Agents and Learning Analytics in MOOC. He was a recipient of an Aarhus University Starting Grant for which he developed the CUBE, an artefact for co-located collaboration.
He is currently the coordinator of the Learning to Be Green (L2BGreen) Erasmus+ project focusing on the design and development of an AI-driven conversational agent for green entrepreneurship, and the technical manager of the Digital Responsibility Education & Training (DIRECT) Erasmus+ project combining learning analytics, machine learning with employability and skill development.
He is particularly interested in AI conversational agents, an area in which he has been active since 2012, and has worked in the MentorChat, colMOOC, Clair, and Gaia conversational agents. Clair, an acronym for collaborative learning agent for interactive reasoning, was the PhD outcome of Dr Adelson de Araujo who was co-supervised by Dr. Papadopoulos. Clair won the esteemed Tool Competition award (50 winners out of 1700 submissions). At the same, in 2024, Dr Papadopoulos was one of the only six people and organizations sponsored by the UNESCO (out of 157 worldwide applications) to offer workshops on their behalf on the UNESCO's Guidance for Generatice AI in Education and Research publication.
His work is published in more than 100 top-ranking international peer-reviewed journals and conferences. At the same time, he likes to teach about the intergration of technology in educational contexts and he has been awarded the Teacher of the Year award several times.
He is a member of the scientific committee in several top-ranking international conferences and a reviewer to major journals in his domain. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS), and the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE).
