I studied econometrics in Tilburg and specialized in Mathematical Economics writing a thesis on algorithms to compute economic equilibria under the supervision of Dolf Talman. I obtained my PhD from Maastricht University sponsored by MERIT, the Maastricht Economic Research institute on Innovation and Technology, under the supervision of Koos Vrieze, Hans Peters and Frank Thuijsman. My thesis 'Dynamics, Equilibria, and Values' dealt with subjects in stochastic game theory, evolutionary game theory, cooperative game theory and mathematical economics. For my post-doc period I obtained two scholarships from METEOR, the graduate school of Maastricht University, and three scholarships from the Max Planck Society to research at the Max Planck Institute on Economic Systems in Jena (director Ulrich Witt). Since 2001 I have been employed by the University of Twente.

I have designed and taught several courses in economics, finance, and econometrics, and supervised more than 120 Master theses and 39 Bachelor theses. Currently, I am supervising two ongoing PhD projects in shared responsibility as a co-promotor.

I am a so-called advisory editor for the Journal of Evolutionary Economics from the Springer Verlag, comparable to an associate editor position elsewhere.

My refereeing/reviewing activities include work for Games & Economic Behavior, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, the International Journal of Game Theory, Social Choice and Welfare, Mathematical Social Sciences, Theory & Decision, Dynamic Games & Applications, Structural Change & Economic Dynamics, Rationality & Society, Southern Journal of Economics, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Journal of Bioeconomics, Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Annals of Operations Research, European Journal of Operations Research, Mathematical Methods of Operations Research; Operations Research in Health Care, International Journal of Technology Management, Innovation: Management, Policy & Practice, IEEE Transactions on Engineering and Management, Journal of Cleaner Production, and several chapters of books.

For two NWO programs, I acted as a Scientific Program Reviewer: the Program(me) on Evolution and Behavio(u)r, and the Vidi-program(me) MaGW (Social and Behavio(u)ral Sciences).
