I have a background in biomedical sciences and movement sciences and have worked in the field of health sciences. My current research focuses on citizen science and applying citizen science in research focused on fatigue and self-management in people with chronic conditions. Furthermore, I have an interest in open science and FAIR data.

Current projects
TopTreat
Towards precision treatment for advanced osteoarthritis
In TopTreat we aim to personalize the management and treatment of osteoarthritis. Through different research activities we want to better understand how osteoarthritis develops for different people, and what would be the best treatment for each person. My role is on ensuring a close collaboration between researchers and patient partners, to include the knowledge of patients already in the research process. The project is a collaboration with Roessingh, Sint Maartenskliniek, Radboudumc, ReumaNL, ATRO Medical, Moveshelf, and the Ministry of Defence.
DIRECT-DCIS
Dynamic Integrative Risk forEcasting to Conquer overTreatment of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ
DIRECT-DCIS project aims to provide optimal care for women diagnosed with DCIS. In the project, we develop a dynamic predictive modelling tool - based on explainable AI - where general information on DCIS is combined with the personal information of a patient. This provides the best information on risks to develop breast cancer, to inform a decision between immediate treatment or a wait-and-see policy. This helps women and their physicians to make an informed decision on their care. My role is to optimize patient involvement in the different research projects. The project is a collaboration with NKI/AVL as PI, many universities, university hospitals, companies, knowledge organisations, and BVN (patient association). The project is financed by NWO-NWA and different private parties.
Cancer patient advocacy in the Netherlands
In this project we aim to better understand prerequisites for cancer patient advocacy in the Netherlands, with a strong aim on roles, responsibilities, impact, and compensation. The project is funded by an OCW Starter Grant.
Long Covid Toolkit
The long covid toolkit is a practical online toolkit offering validated scientific research and experiences of patients and healthcare providers concerning interventions for long covid. It is developed by people with long covid, for people with long covid. I am involved in gathering the scientific information on different interventions, and to collect information on patient's experiences with using those interventions. The project is a collaboration with the Stichting Long Covid Toolkit and is financed by ZonMw.
Strength of citizen science
In this project we aim to provide a state-of-the-art overview of citizen science for health in the Netherlands. The project is a collaboration with Avans Hogeschool and is financed by ZonMw and the Dutch Heart Foundation.
REIS
Rheuma and I: self-management
In this project we aim to create an overview of all self-management activities that people with rheumatic conditions apply in daily life, to manage their condition and its symptoms. The project is a collaboration with Roessingh and the Sint Maartenskliniek and is partially financed by ReumaNL and TOPFIT/ICMS.
Finished projects
TOPFIT Citizenlab
a large consortium of knowledge institutions (University of Twente, Saxion applied university, ROC Twente), healthcare organizations (Roessingh Research&Development, ZGT, etc) and industry (Demcon Hemics, etc). Research in health and technology through applying citizen science.
ECIE
ECIE is a collaboration of 6 European universities within the ECIU consortium. The focus of ECIE is to improve empowerment, inclusiveness, and equity of citizen science projects
