Bas Denters (1954) is emeritus professor of Public Governance in the Faculty of Behavioral, Management & Social Sciences (Public Administration department) at the University of Twente (Enschede, The Netherlands). After having worked in the Public Administration department at the UT for more than 40 years he retired in 2020. From 2012 - 2019 he was the Scientific Director of the Netherlands Institute for Government (NIG): the KNAW accredited Dutch – Flemish graduate school for Political Science and Public Administration. From 2000-2010 he was the convener of the Standing Group on Local Politics and Government (LOGOPOL) of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR). For 22 years he was also active as member of the Board of the European Urban Research Association. From 2010-2019 he served as the managing editor of Bestuurswetenschappen - the oldest Dutch public administration journal and as member of the editorial board of Local Government Studies, the leading European journal in the field of local politics and governance. He has published on issues of local governance and local democracy, citizen initiatives, citizen participation and political trust. During his academic carreer he twice recieved the NIG Best Supervisor Award. Moreover, he received the NKWP Annual Award for the best Dutch Political Science publication for his dissertation (Partijen, Kiezers en Gemeentelijke Beleid, 1987). After his retirement Bas Denters remained active in academic publications, as reviewer, and (until 2025) as PhD supervisor.
