Simon Baltus studied Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, specializing in Medical Imaging and Interventions. The subject of his Master's thesis was "The use of deep learning to improve lesion localization during imaging-guided liver surgery", which he performed at the Surgery department of the Dutch Cancer Institute. After graduating in July 2022, he started as a Ph.D. candidate in September 2022 at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence (Meander Medical Centre, Amersfoort, the Netherlands) under the supervision of Prof. Ivo Broeders and Dr. Can Tan. His research focuses on improving the quality of interventional healthcare through the analysis and modeling of pre-operative (imaging) and intra-operative data. Most of his projects focus on the pre-operative prediction of surgical outcomes (e.g., the chance of complications). By developing and integrating these Artificial Intelligence-based digital solutions in the operating room, he aims to establish a more patient-tailored treatment and enable a more targeted use of our care resources.
