Sofia received the master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon. She performed her master's thesis project entitled “Microfluidic cell-chip for an in vitro hepatic disease model” at INESC Microsistemas e Nanotecnologias Research Center in collaboration with IMED - Research Institute of Medicines. After completing her master’s degree, she worked as a research assistant at the same institute for one year. During this period, she worked on the development and optimization of a system to purify and detect PSA using microfluidic devices. Sofia is passionate about pioneering novel physiological culture methodologies and systems for advancing disease modeling and toxicology studies. Eager to contribute expertise to hands-on R&D endeavors, with a focus on the development of innovative biomedical products, including microfluidic biosensors and organs-on-chip. Currently she is doing a PhD candidate at BIOS Lab-on-chip group, University of Twente, and her research is focus on the detection of biomarkers using nanopore's technology.
