Being an Associate Professor in theĀ Department of Natural Resources , I aimĀ to inform society about the fate of (semi) natural (agro) ecosystems. In many countries, information on ecosystems is scarce. Nevertheless, ecosystems in these countries often harbour rich biodiversity and the services they deliver to society are large but often not well quantified. To effectively protect and manage (agro) ecosystems requires reliable methods to estimate the current state and changes in these ecosystems from observations, both remotely sensed as well as from the ground. To this end, I teach about and study empirical spatial interpolation techniques (so called species distribution modelling in ecology or environmental niche modelling in agronomy), stress detection in vegetation with thermal infrared remote sensing techniques and how to extract early warning signals of tipping points in ecosystems from satellite time series.Ā

Research profiles
I am active in education in the two masters programmes of the faculty for Geo-Information Science & Earth Observation (ITC) in the courses of the pre-master for spatial engineering and in the interfaculty master on Humanitarian Engineering. Besides, I play a role in the coordination of the Spatial Engineering Master as programme director.
