Since 2003, I have been working as a chemistry teacher, teaching various subjects (chemistry, physics and chemistry (NaSk), general science (ANW), and Nature, Life & Technology (NLT)) to different grade levels. I combine teaching with my passion for research and educational innovation. In 2007, I began my PhD research at ELAN, which resulted in my 2012 dissertation titled: "Professional development as a strategy for curriculum implementation in multidisciplinary science education."

After completing my PhD, I continued as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Twente, where I conducted four years of research on the integration of Science and Language in education. During this period, I developed the ā€œlanguage marker,ā€ a tool designed to help students express their conceptual understanding in chemistry more effectively. This research led to the publication ā€œWriting prompts help improve expression of conceptual understanding in Chemistry.ā€ Additionally, I collaborated with colleagues to develop a three-part lesson series focused on Analyzing, Explaining, and Formulating, aimed at helping students improve the content of their answers on exam questions.

Since September 2017, I have been working as a chemistry education specialist at the University of Twente, where my primary responsibility is training future chemistry teachers. In this role, I teach courses such as Introduction to Didactics, Didactics 1, and Didactics 2, and I supervise students during their internships through lesson observations and reflective group sessions. I also guide their educational research, known as Research in Education, where students conduct in-depth studies on improving (chemistry) education.

In addition to my teaching responsibilities, I supervise PhD candidates. One of them focuses on citizenship education within chemistry, while the other investigates how cutting-edge research can be used as a context in the classroom.

I am also involved with the University of Twente’s assessment center, where I serve as a general and subject assessor. In this role, I evaluate candidates on both general and subject-specific competencies. Finally, I coordinate the Chemistry Professional Learning Network (PLN), a platform where first- and second-degree teachers collaborate to deepen their knowledge of contemporary chemistry education, exchange ideas, and work together to innovate and improve their lessons.
