My PhD is focussed on the design of Solid Oxide Electrolyzers (SOE). A metal supported architecture is optimized in terms of performance and durability. The optimization is performed at different scales. First at the membrane-electrode assembly level, where the microkinetics are very relavant. The second scale is on the cell level, with 2 dimensional concentration gradients. Lastly, there is the stack scale with temperature gradients.

To do the optimization, multiscale modelling tools are developed as design tools. These are multiphysiscs based models which employ parallel computing to significantly speed up computational times. The models are verified using experimental data obtained at different operating scales.
