Waku Shimizu was born in Kanagawa, Japan, in December 1995. He began his studies in Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology at Chiba University in 2014. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he joined the Fine Organic Chemistry Laboratory, specializing in asymmetric synthesis, and obtained his Master of Engineering degree in 2020.
Following his graduate studies, he joined The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., where he was primarily responsible for the development of new tread compounds and technologies for passenger car tires.
In April 2026, he joined the Elastomer Technology and Engineering (ETE) group at the University of Twente as a PhD candidate under the contract between the University of Twente and The Yokohama Rubber Company Ltd. His research focuses on exploring the internal structure of rubber compounds in order to enhance their toughness and resistance to fatigue failure.
